The ECM Giotto is a high quality built semi-commercial machine manufactured by the well respected ECM company (Espresso Coffee Machines based in Milan, Italy). It is available through Coffee Select only in a stainless steel finish. As a semi-commercial machine, the Giotto will simultaneously deliver coffee and steam milk. It will also dispense hot water through the water tap on the right hand side (steam via the wand on the left). Up to 8 ceramic cappuccino cups can be stacked on the top which will maintain a warmed temperature via heating vents.
This is a semi-commercial coffee machine suited to the style and quality conscious buying for the longterm. When compared with the purchase and repair costs of a new age automatic machine, a semi- commercial represents significantly better value with greater reliability and superior performance.
The ECM Giotto can be plumbed into your water mains (although hard to justify the cost of $250) or used with the standard 2.9 litre water tank. It is self-priming and has an auto-cut-off feature preventing total exhaustion of the water supply and damage to the machine. The drip tray is easily removed for emptying.
The Giotto group head is the child of the famous FAEMA E61 group which, when released in 1961 revolutionised commercial espresso machine design. This design is highly respected by resellers and coffee machine owners around the world.
As an option a coffee pod adapter can be installed in the group head within 5 minutes which removes the need for a grinder and maintains a much cleaner operation, important for the business kitchen.
TIPS FOR THE GIOTTO
When approaching the machine to make coffee, run water through the portafilter as a ritual. This will flush hot water through the head and condition the system for the best "make". Always clean the portafilter and leave in the group head to distribute heat to it. If not, a "cold" portafilter will drain heat from the group when loaded affect the taste of coffee. Always use pre-heated glasses for the same reason.
MOST ASKED QUESTION
What does the lever on the right hand side of the group head do? The lever allows the user to manually operate the pump and open/close the valves housed within the group head. By lifting the lever to it's full height water is dispensed through the head until it it pushed down again releasing the pressure created. The lifting of the lever operates spring loaded connecting rods, one above the head and the other below the group. This action allows the water to leave the boiler and be syphoned through the group under pressure. When pushed down the top rod drops and the bottom is pushed down directing the pressured water through the bottom of the group into the drip tray. (So when you see water leaving the bottom of your group don't panic).
